A reliable integration is not merely a connector. It is an operating rule with defined ownership, field mapping, security, monitoring, exception handling, documentation, and change control.
Map the handoff first
Identify where information starts, who creates it, which fields matter, when another system needs it, and what employees do today to complete the handoff. This reveals whether the problem is missing connectivity, inconsistent process, poor data, or unclear ownership.
Name one source of truth
For each important record—customer, invoice, project, service request, employee, or product—decide which system owns the authoritative version. Two-way synchronization without ownership rules can multiply conflicts instead of solving them.

Design for failure
Connections will encounter missing fields, duplicates, expired access, vendor outages, changed schemas, and unexpected values. Define retries, alerts, an exception queue, responsible owners, and reconciliation before launch.
Test real cases
Test normal records, incomplete records, duplicates, updates, cancellations, deleted items, permission failures, and replayed events. Confirm that employees can see status and recover without reading code.
Document ownership
Record the systems, credentials, triggers, mappings, business rules, failure paths, dashboards, vendors, and people responsible for operation and change. An integration nobody understands becomes another fragile dependency.
